Isabell Kittell continues her series of interviews with the longboarding community in the Philippines. Today we hear from young Gian Carlo.

Gian Carlo has been training diligently on the ramp of his family, which has started to be build during lockdown and got finished just a few months ago. Read his story here and enjoy some of his awesome tricks!

“My name is Gian and I am from Baler, Aurora. I prefer tricks and skateboarding. I started here when they built the ramp [right next to where I live]. It has been put up for 1 month now. I became very interested to learn after this was built. My favorite subject in school is Filipino.”

When did you start skating?

Almost one month sya naglalaro.Medyo bago lang po ako. 10 years old lang po ako.Araw araw po ako nagsskate. Umaga hanggang hapon.”

Maybe around the last week of June, the ramp was put up. It’s been almost a month of Gian skating. I’m fairly new. I am only 10 years old. I skate every day from moring to late afternoon.

What is your favourite trick?

“Favorite tricks ko po ay tawag 50-50.”

My favorite trick is called 50-50.

Do you have any idol you look up to?

“Sila kuya Mak [Feliciano].

Mak Feliciano is my idol when it comes to skating. We have a group, we are around 11 in this group. And he is the one who teaches me. I get inspired when they perform tricks like rock’n’roll and blunt. I’m trying to learn those now.

What is your favourite place to skate?

Here in the ramp. This is so far the only place I tried skating in.

What would be your hobby if you didn’t skate?

If I wasn’t skating now I would probably be biking. Like BMX.

How did you feel about the lockdown?

I was sad during the lockdown because we weren’t able to leave, especially being a minor. School was okay. It was vacation when the lockdown started. Now, our school’s system is modular.

Thank you Gian Carlo! Keep it up!

Thank you Alex Giorgetti for leading this lovely interview and transcribing and translating it after!
