Bleek 2017

We asked downhill newcomer James Pethybridge his view on this annual event hosted, as always, by Brianne Collective.

“As soon as we arrived everyone was warm and welcoming with everyone keen to get some speed!!! All of the regular riders were happy to help with tricks and tips along the way.

This is my first year in the BDSL, something I wouldn’t even have contemplated without the influence of Bodhi Keen and Tom Campbell, but everyone I have met in the BDSL has inspired me to push my riding to the next level.

Bleek certainly did that! It’s a very fast hill and, with speeds reaching up to 50mph, probably the most demanding course I have attended so far.  Although I have skated fast in the past, Bleek was a whole new kettle of fish.  The course is fairly narrow which made for some very tight intense riding.

I started slowly, thinking how are these guys going so fast!! After a few runs following the likes of Jonny Braund, Aaron Skippings, Kurtis Dawe and Oliver Slaughter, I soon picked up the pace in no time!

I had a fast bail with Josh Monk not long before my first heat which definitely threw me off my game.  Bleek certainly taught me the value of wearing leathers!!!

In the racing, I was up against Jonny Braund, who is currently smashing the BDSL, so my work was cut out!!! I kept up with him most of the way but I chickened out on the fast section. I was so disappointed because I know I could have been faster!!!

This place is simply amazing. If you have been skating a while and want to push yourself this course is the one – I will definitely be going back!”
